This is the exhibition catalog for In Between, the latest solo exhibition by Indonesian contemporary artist Syaiful Garibaldi. Organized by Mind Set Art Center and curated by southeast Asian art specialist Keong Ruoh Ling, the exhibition was held at Mind Set Art Center from May 10 to June 20, 2024. In Between features 41 pieces of artist's latest works and a selection of drawings, presenting his recent explorations across various mediums, including acrylic paintings, laser engravings, and large-scale installations.
Garibaldi studied agriculture before transitioning into art during his academic career. This inspired his application of scientific background to create a conceptual foundation for his art. More recently, Garibaldi has turned his attention to mycelium. Mycelium composites are frail in its biodegradable quality yet strong enough to be used as building material succinctly. This duality points to a theme close to the heart of the artist and inspires him to depict the effervescent world of fungi that are always branched, entangled and anastomosing. Therein lies the aspiration of this exhibition, an experimentation to encase and showcase the constant cycles of decomposition and growth as well as the countless “in-between” moments.
