Many years after the phrase “The medium is the message” coined by Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980), different types of image and message have even rapidly blossomed and taken over human beings’ sensation and perception. Movies being one of the influential media since 20th century, its footage pictures, action stills, soundtracks and quotes absolutely become the collective memory of this generation. As Jhong was born and raised into an artist in the digital era, it is nature that the image fragments from film stills through different mediums processing feeds the artist with boundless inspirations.
The artist fetches the creation ideas from the movies, such as The Cells, The Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Psycho and etc. However, compared to the narratives, he is far more fascinated with the flash of aura when images displaying on screens. Under his strokes, the transition of refraction, color casting, melting, and dissociation appeared on those screen images becomes fanciful colors and queer pictures on the canvas, meanwhile detach from the common viewing experience. In the works in the exhibition, Jhong applies diverse techniques by turns to render the texture of monitor, that serves the purpose in delineation of the double illusions of low-res pixels and switch frames. His attempts to collect the fleeting fractions dissociated from the screen as well as connotations associated with the frame stills result in the aggregation and generation of a greater image of visual perceptions.
