8 July - 19 August 2023

Mind Set Art Center is honored to present a solo exhibitions in July: “Dashu Contemporary” by Taiwanese artist LEE Ming-tse, The show is set to launch on July 8, at 3 p.m. We extend a warm invitation to you to join us.

“Dashu Contemporary” consists of three new mixed media artworks by LEE Ming-tse. They are the outcome of the artist shifting his focus to himself and the minute details in his life during while he sequestered himself in his home during the pandemic. The word “Dashu” in the title refers to Dashu District in southwest Kaohsiung City, where LEE works and lives. “Dashu Contemporary” therefore hints at LEE’s perspective overlooking the world from his home. The artist took inspiration from his surroundings and his memories. Moments of his childhood spent in the country side, the habit of collecting old folk items, or his recent experience of undergoing acupuncture therapy, these can all be found in the three giant pieces of image fairies. An “image fairy” is one of the most iconic toys in Taiwan back in the 60’s and 70’s. LEE has incorporated the shape of many folklore characters when shaping each piece of fiberglass. He then pasted gauze and paper on top to create the texture of collage and burn marks. The process serves as a metaphor for the healing of the trauma that we’ve collectively suffered during the last three years. By applying complex techniques and transforming different materials, LEE has imbued key cultures figures such as Wuxia characters, the Buddhist goddess of Guanyin, and the noblewomen from the early Republic of China era with whole new significance in his “Dashu Contemporary” series. Through his unique perspective, the viewers are transferred back to a point in time that’s filled with nostalgia and cherished memories. In LEE’s hands, objects, images, stories and materials are transformed into a whole new stage where new tales and imaginations come to life.
