Albert Yonathan Setyawan Indonesia , b. 1983

Albert Yonathan Setyawan  (b. 1983, Indonesia) is a contemporary ceramic artist who currently lives and works in Japan. One of his focuses is the meaning of “repeating motion”, such as why people follow and repeat certain routines in their life. The artist has also been exploring the material nature and heritage of clay, on the basis of which he has made a series of creations in the field of contemporary ceramic art. Setyawan has also expanded to other creative fields, including painting, multi-media installation, performance art and video recording.

 

Setyawan graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology in 2012 with a Master of Fine Arts. He then moved to Kyoto, Japan and eventually earned a Ph.D for his studies in contemporary ceramics. His works have been displayed at several major exhibitions, including the 55th Venice Biennale, the 2017 show “Sunshower: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now” at the Mori Art Museum, in Tokyo, Japan, and “Contemporary Worlds: Indonesia” at the National Gallery of Australia in 2019.
